The Five-Line Update That Makes You Visible
You deliver consistently and still get skipped when opportunities are shared. Your manager mostly hears from you when something has already gone wrong.
Most managers are drowning in their own reporting. The person who makes a manager's job legible becomes the person they trust, defend, and think of first. Silence is rarely read as competence. In hybrid teams, and in the WhatsApp-first way most Nigerian workplaces actually run, work that is not narrated is genuinely invisible - not because anyone is unfair, but because nobody can see your screen.
Use five lines, every Friday: done, doing, blocked, what I need from you, what is coming. Send it on the channel your manager actually reads, which is email in a bank and WhatsApp in most SMEs. Consistency matters more than eloquence, and outcomes matter more than activity - list what changed, not how hard you worked. A list of efforts reads as a plea; a list of outcomes reads as a report.
There are two quiet benefits. You build a written record of every blocker you raised and when, which protects you when a project slips for reasons that were never yours. And you slowly retrain your own attention: people who write outcomes weekly start choosing work that produces outcomes.
In practice
A junior analyst at a Lagos fintech began sending five-line Friday updates on WhatsApp to his team lead. Within four months he was invited into a Monday planning call he had never been part of, because his lead had started pasting his lines into her own report to the CTO and wanted him in the room to explain them. The total cost was about ten minutes a week for sixteen weeks.
Be easy to report on.
Action step
Send your manager five lines this Friday - done, doing, blocked, what you need, what is coming - on the channel they actually read, and repeat it next Friday.
