Rest Is a Discipline, Not a Reward

Your week runs from work to church activity to side hustle, and the only rest you get is the rest you collapse into. Stopping deliberately feels irresponsible, possibly lazy.

The Sabbath command was given to a people just out of slavery, and that context carries most of its meaning. Egypt had no rest days, because a slave's value is entirely output. A stopped day asserted, weekly, that their worth was not their productivity and that the world would keep turning without their labour for twenty-four hours. It was an economic and psychological claim before it was a ritual. The Friday rhythm of Jumu'ah carries a related instinct - an appointment that interrupts commerce rather than politely fitting around it.

Religious life can quietly reproduce the very thing rest was meant to break. It is entirely possible to move from vigil to workshop to committee meeting and never once stop, and busy for God is still busy. Rest is not the same as church attendance. Sometimes it means missing the Saturday programme, sleeping properly, eating slowly, and spending unhurried time with people you love with no task attached.

Make it structural or it will not happen. Choose a fixed block - a full day is ideal, an evening plus a morning is what many people can realistically defend - decide in advance what will not be done in it, agree phone rules, and tell the people who would otherwise call. Expect the first attempts to feel anxious rather than restful. That anxiety is information: it shows how much of your identity was resting on being needed. Meeting that discovery is the point of the practice, not a side effect.

In practice

A shop owner in Ikeja traded seven days a week and filled his evenings with church duties. He closed on Sundays entirely, convinced he would lose his weekend customers. Takings dipped for about two months, then largely recovered as regulars shifted their shopping to Saturday. What changed most was not the money. His children began expecting Sunday afternoons with him, and he says he stopped resenting the shop.

You are not the reason the world keeps running.

Action step

Block one 24-hour period in the coming week, decide in advance the three things you will not do in it, and tell the people who would otherwise call you.
